Burlesque Fest!

My cousin and I were lucky enough to catch Dita Von Teese and Friends performing last week at the House of Blues here in Dallas. The show was a Vaudeville smash hit, a parade of dazzling performers in glitter, lace, feathers, fans and balloons. It was a show I'll never forget- if you ever have the chance to see Strip Strip Hooray yourself, do it. These were dancers and comedians who were once only seen in Paris at the Crazy Horse. Imagine the film Moulin Rouge in vibrant 3D- dancing girls, dancing boys, the air full of confetti and booze...it was beyond compare. Dita herself performed four times, the Swarovski Crystal Martini Glass, a bull ride the likes of which Texas has never seen, the Carousel Horse and the Opium Den. Along with her were Murray Hill as MC, Dirty Martini, MediaNoche, Monsieur Romeo, Lena from Russia and Selene Luna- each a unique take on the old Burlesque model. There were tassels twirling, feathers fanning, balloons popping and opium pipes smoking. We had the most incredible night.

Nerdist Humor

photos by bill ellison http://www.flickr.com/people/billellisonphotographer/

My cousin and I got to meet Nerdist.com comedian Chris Hardwick at the Granada Theater last week- if you haven't listened to his podcasts, DO. He is a font of uproariously funny nerd humor and I can't say enough great things about him. Mike Phirman opened the show and also joined Chris for a musical medley of songs (one about Pi, of all things.) If you love Star Wars, video games, Star Trek, Dr. Who, Buffy and the Whedonverse, the mechanics of writing comedy, Kevin Smith, Wil Wheaton, or are generally fond of silliness, check out Nerdist.com and laugh mightily.

Mail Art I've Sent

WARNING: Humble brag to follow- here is a sample of the mail art I've sent out in the past six months. I've gone through a few incarnations and this is a mix of my different styles. I'm fairly A.D.D. when it comes to faction, so I'm on to new things already.

Books I've finished

I went through a phase where I felt guilty reading novels. Really. My thesis has been such an albatross, I feel bad spending time doing anything besides working on it. I broke out of that guilt-o-whirl with a spate of outstanding reads. Here are just a few.

Mail art headed out the door and ready to confuse the mail lady! These are puffy postcards with 1950s ladies. They are squishy 3-d postcards with the stamps hand stitched on so they won't come loose.

This is a baby quilt I made for my friend Anii in Japan- I didn't know the baby's sex, so it is a neutral green and brown. And very fuzzy. It left a thin sheen of brown fur all over my couch. This just blends in with the red fur already there from Fonzie.

This is Deacon with our favorite band the Kingbucks! We got to see them again at Lee Harvey's this past weekend and they all remembered and hugged us. They really loved the gig they played for Deacon and said they talk about it as one of their favorite shows!! They are really great guys and we are always looking for fellow dancers to go to show with! Hint hint!!!

Deacon looking dapper at the Lakewood Tour of Homes this past weekend. This is a tour of cute houses in our area and it is a reminder of how awesome my house will never look. Thanks Barbie and Robert for the free tix- we have to go together next time. The girls will OOOH and Ahh and the boys can be bored out of their skulls together!
